Welcome to My Finnish Kitchen

Hei! My name is Peaches, and food has always been my strongest connection to my Finnish roots. Growing up in Australia in a big family, the kitchen was the heart of our home. Our traditions weren’t about fancy meals, but about filling the pot to the brim, feeding every hungry belly, and sharing laughter over the table.

Finnish food is heavy, comforting, and full of history — dishes designed to warm people through long, cold winters. For us, those same dishes became part of Christmas in tropical Queensland, where hot casseroles simmered while the summer sun blazed outside. Over the years, I’ve kept these traditions alive, carrying them with me to Darwin, and making them part of my own story.

On this site, I share five of the recipes that mean the most to me:

  • Riisipuuro – creamy Christmas rice porridge
  • Täytekakku – my family’s festive cream cake (known in Darwin as “Heavy Cake”)
  • Riisipiirakka – Karelian rice pasties, my childhood freezer favourite
  • Sima – Finnish lemon mead, now my citrus-experiment tradition
  • Karjalanpaisti – the hearty Karelian stew that defined Christmas for us
  • Each recipe comes with a personal story — memories of family kitchens, Christmas tables, and my own journey discovering Finnish food as an adult.
